6 surprising things you would love on your move to Edmonton

Move to Edmonton

You’ve already read about Canada’s gateway to the west in our previous spotlight on the City of Winnipeg. Well, now we think it’s time we introduced you to Canada’s “Gateway to the North”; welcome to Edmonton!

City Spotlight: Edmonton

Are you planning on moving to Edmonton? Would like to know a little more before you get there? We have the details! A great place to work and play, Edmonton is Alberta’s second most popular city, and it’s easy to see why.

Plenty of Shopping

If you love to shop, you’re going to love Edmonton. Here, you’ll find farmers markets and boutiques as well as artisan style shops and major retailers. You’re also guaranteed to be in close proximity to a mall, no matter where you are in town. Of course, you could always shop til’ you drop at West Edmonton Mall. West Ed offers over 800 stores and services, so we’re sure both shopping AND dropping are a definite possibility.

Amazing Attractions

Speaking of West Edmonton Mall, it’s more than just the ultimate shopping venue, it’s a great place to have some fun for the day (or entire weekend). Featuring a massive water park (over 20 water slides!), indoor amusement park, aquarium, skating rink and much more, you’ll definitely need more than a day. Other awesome Edmonton attractions include Fort Edmonton Park (Canada’s largest living history museum), the Edmonton Valley Zoo and the Telus World of Science.

Festivals and Events

As we mentioned, Edmonton is known as Canada’s “Gateway to the North”, but it’s also known as Canada’s festival city. The Folk Music Festival and world-famous Fringe Festival definitely draw crowds in addition to festivals for everything from wine to ribs. These events aren’t just dependent on summer weather either. A winter-friendly city, Edmonton is also host to several festivals and events in the colder months, too.

Getting Around

On the logistical side, we thought we should mention how easy it is to get around here (a very important attribute for a city with so many things to see and do). The Whitemud, Highway 2 and Yellowhead are great for getting you from one end of the city to the other, while the newly completed Anthony Henday outer ring road is great for getting you around it. Transit is readily available in nearly every neighbourhood, and the Edmonton LRT system will have you where you need to go quickly.

A Great Place to Get Outside

If you love the outdoors, you’ll love the parks in Edmonton and surrounding areas. Hit the Yellowhead and take off to Jasper for the weekend or stay home and take a stroll through the city’s beautiful River Valley. Here, you’ll find a network of walking paths, bike trails and scenic river views. From botanical gardens, dog parks and splash parks to the end of the world and an accidental beach – there are plenty of great opportunities to get some fresh air.

Good Eats

Last but not least, Edmonton is a great place to grab a bite. Home to several one-of-a-kind restaurants, cafes and gastropubs, you’ll have your choice of everything from food truck fare to high-end dining. Or, you can satisfy your inner foodie and try it all by attending one of Edmonton’s many food-related events including What the Truck?! or Taste of Edmonton.
