5 Apps For Moving You Should Download Now | Two Small Men

It seems like there’s an app for everything these days, so why shouldn’t there be one for moving? While most moving companies themselves don’t have an app, there are a lot of apps out there that can help with your moving process. Our 5 Favourite Apps for MovingFrom planning for a move, to packing, to home design, to maintenance after you move in, our five favourite moving apps will help keep you organized from move start to finish and beyond. Check them out here:  Sortly: Inventory Management App Sortly is a great app for moving because it allows you to keep all of your belongings organized and accounted for. You can create an inventory of your things by taking photos of everything and grouping them together. We suggest grouping them by room, but you can do it by item type or any other category you want. Two Small Men Tip: We suggest using the Sortly app to help with downsizing. Take pictures of all your items and then group them into Keep, Sell, Donate categories.  Wunderlist: Task Management App If you’re the kind of person who likes keeping an organized calendar of tasks, then Wunderlist is the app for you. This app will let you create lists with due dates and reminders - which you can assign to other people who also have the app. It’s able to integrate with a number of other apps, like your calendars. Two Small Men tip: If you’re moving with a whole family, use the app to assign tasks to each of your family members. Put someone in charge of booking the moving company, someone of making the moving day essentials kit, someone of cancelling or moving the internet service and more. Evernote: Task/Note Organization App Moving can be a complex process. If you’re trying to remember all of the specifics about what’s happening when and where and how can be difficult. With the Evernote app, you can capture, organize, and share notes from anywhere.Notes can include links, checklists, tables, attachments, and audio recordings. Even handwritten notes are searchable, meaning you can keep all the information about movers, realtors, services, and more organized. Two Small Men tip: Share your notes with others to keep everyone on the same page. It’s great that you have notes about what your moving company needs you to do on moving day, but it's better if your whole family has them. MagicPlan: Home Planning App This is one of our favourite apps for moving because it’s so useful and fun at the same time. MagicPlan allows you to use your phone camera to take measurements and photos of the rooms your new home and use them to create detailed floor plans. You can place furniture and see how everything will fit.Even if you don’t have access to your new home to take the live footage, if you know measurements you can enter them manually and still use the app for furniture layout purposes. Two Small Men tip: Use the MagicPlan app in conjunction with Sortly to see if you can place all of your current belongings logically into your new home. If you can’t, it might be time to move some things to the Sell and Donate piles. You can get MagicPlan on iOS and Android.{{cta('90653a15-223b-4dfc-a0c3-e6c0936c2a6b')}} BrightNest: Home Improvement App There’s an app for after you move in too. Top 5 Tips to have an Eco-friendly Move | Go Green | Two Small Men

You care about the environment, and so do we. That’s why we know it’s important to you to keep your move as eco-friendly as possible. But, when you’re hauling everything you own across the city (or across the country) it’s hard to keep things green. Here’s How to Have an Environmentally Friendly Move:Limit the CardboardWhen most people start packing, they go out and get a whole bunch of cardboard boxes to pack everything in. While cardboard can be recycled, too often it ends up in the garbage. Limited the amount of cardboard boxes for moving is a great way to keep the environment in mind when moving. Some tips for how to limit the amount of cardboard you use: Get reusable boxes – We are glad to have a partnership with Frog Box, through which we can get you great deals on reusable, plastic packing boxes. You can rent the boxes from them, and then return them when you’re finished. They also have biodegradable mattress and furniture covers available. Pack in containers you already have – Limit the cardboard you use when moving by packing your belongings into containers you already have. Try suitcases, Rubbermaid Containers, chests, and more. Save boxes throughout the year – If you know you’re going to be moving in the coming year, save any cardboard boxes (or other material) you receive and use them to pack later. DIY Packing MaterialsIt’s not just the boxes that cause excessive garbage and waste following a move; the materials you pack in those boxes are also an environmental hazard. Plastic bubble wrap, packing peanuts, Styrofoam, and other materials are bad for the environment and, because you usually can’t reuse them, they get thrown away.Try securing your dishes and other fragile materials with dishcloths, blankets, towels, or even clothes to limit the packing materials you use.Make as Few Trips as PossibleWe all know that doing a lot of driving is not all that eco-friendly. As a moving company, there’s not much we can do to avoid driving. But, hiring us to move you can actually save on gas usage.Instead of you having to make many trips in your small vehicle, we can limit it to one trip in our large truck. To help limit trips as much as possible, make sure you double check your old home before leaving so no one has to return.Donate Extra BelongingsHave some things you can’t, or don’t want to, take with you to your new home? Don’t throw them away and create waste; donate them. There are a lot of great organizations out there that can use the furniture, clothes, and food you aren’t moving with.We are so proud to have partnerships with the Cerebral Palsy Associations of Alberta and BC for you to easily donate clothing and small furniture items. For larger furniture items, we are partnered with the Habitat For Humanity Restore. And, through our new partnership with Move For Hunger, you can give us food you want to give away and we’ll take care of the donating.Clean GreenPretty much everyone cleans their old home before they move out and their new home before they move in. But, cleaning products can have environmentally harmful chemicals in them. Part of having an eco-friendly move is cleaning prior to and after your move with natural cleaning ingredients.Planning a move this summer? Downsizing? Here’s how to Decide what Stays and what Goes

Moving to a smaller home? Facing a bunch of unwanted clutter? Looking to save money by moving less stuff? Whatever the reason, you need to downsize. We see a lot of people who, on starting to pack for their move, realize they have a lot more stuff than they thought they did. But, while realizing the need to downsize may be easy, figuring out how to do it can be more difficult. Our Best Tips for Downsizing before MovingDeciding which of your belongings you’re going to get rid of when downsizing for a move is difficult; that’s understandable. To make the right choices, you need the right method. Here are our best practices for deciding what to keep and what to get rid of (that doesn’t mean throw away). Ask: Would you Buy a New One if You Lost it? Don’t be hasty when deciding which items you’re going to give away and which ones you’re going to keep. If the item is something you would replace if it was lost, keep it.Two Small Men Tip: Make a list of things you would immediately replace if you lost them. Even if these things are technically irreplaceable, like family heirlooms, if you would immediately want them back if they became lost, put them on the list.   Take it Room by Room Don’t just sit down at the kitchen table and start thinking about everything you have in your house. Go through each room one by one and take note of everything you have there. Remember to include garages, sheds, and basements. Two Small Men Tip: Make an actual physical note of anything you forgot you even had, or anything you know you don’t want to take with you. Make sure to gather or move these things before your movers arrive. That way you can be certain they won’t get packed up with the room.{{cta('90653a15-223b-4dfc-a0c3-e6c0936c2a6b')}} Ask: Will it fit in your new floor plan? Surprisingly, something a lot of people forget to think about when they’re downsizing is their new home. If you’re planning to downsize for a move, you need to consider where and how things will fit into your new home. Two Small Men Tip: Get out the floor plans for your new home (if you have them) and try to draw in or visualize where all of your furniture will fit.  Get a Second Opinion It’s hard to give things away. Even if you literally never use it. That’s why we always suggest getting an objective opinion from someone who doesn’t live in your home. They’ll be able to talk some sense into you about items you actually don’t need to take with you when you move. Two Small Men Tip: Make a list of every item you considered giving away but then decided to keep. Ask your second opinion what they think to make sure you aren’t just making an emotional decision.  Ask: Could Someone Else Use it More? Are you saving things in your basement or storage room because sometime in the future you or your family might need them? If you don’t know for sure whether you’ll ever actually use the item, consider giving it to someone who really needs it. Two Small Men Tip: Donate these items to charities and organizations that can ensure they’ll go to a family in need. Two Small Men has a partnership with the Cerebral Palsy Associations of Alberta and BC wherein the organization will come pick up small furniture and clothing from clients before or on moving day. Not only is this a great way to give back to someone in need, it’s a convenient and easy way to downsize before moving.Planning a move this summer?
