12 Ways You Can Save Money on Your Move

Did you recently buy a new home or signed the lease for a new apartment? Or, you might have spent a lot of money on a great piece of art or furniture. But now as you are moving to a new place, you might cancel out moving services, simply, because it might seem like a pricey endeavour.

But, is there any guarantee, you can move expensive items securely?

If you genuinely want to make your moves more affordable, there are several ways to save money. First, and foremost, the priority should be to make your moves less time consuming and hassle-free. As you consume less time of the moving professionals, the moves get more affordable.

Here are 12 ways to save money on your move and make them less time-consuming:

Move on a random weekday:

If you want to really get this right, try and avoid moving at the end or the beginning of the month, because those tend to be the busiest times for the moving companies. When the demand is lower, you’ll get better rates for the move. If you have flexibility with the move, call the moving companies and get quotes for various days in the month. Also, note that demand is usually higher during the summer season. With Two Small Men, if you have flexible moving schedule, we can pretty much find you a significant discount (up to $30 per hour). Prepare for Your Move:

The best way to save money on your move is by being as prepared as possible. If you are organized and have your home clean and ready with all your items packed before movers can pick your stuff, obviously the move will be less time-consuming. As a result, less pricey!

When Doing Packing:

If you have opted for our packing service, small things can prompt packing and make it hassle-free. For instance, consider bringing items out of cabinets, make sure your dishwasher is empty, and be sure to check hutches, and desks!

Get creative with packing:

If you are doing the packing yourself, get little creative! Load up your suitcases, laundry hampers, baskets and coolers rather than buying boxes and bins for everything. Also, try using your towels to pad the breakables instead of using the rolls of bubble wraps.

Skip the Yard Sale:

We know there is no sense in moving unwanted items, but it takes a lot more effort to host a garage sale. Instead, be more digital! Click some pictures and post the things on Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji with detailed descriptions. Most buyers are willing to come and pick up the items that align with your schedule.

Clear out any obstacles:

Make your move safer by clearing out the walkways of ice, snow, or any other obstructions. This will make it easier for the movers to use dollies, 4-wheelers etc.

Drag Items to a Common Area:

If you can, try and move your boxes to the garage or common area where the crew can quickly load them up. As the items are more accessible, movers can quickly figure out what things need to be placed first and last according to priority.

Give clear directions:

Be sure to clear about what you want to be moved. Give instructions of where you want items placed at the new location. As the Two Small Men movers code every box, be sure to let them know about what stuff needs to be put at which place.

Get ahead with Disassembling/Assembling:

Our movers at Two Small Men are happy to provide any disassembly and re-assembly for your furniture. However, if you can get ahead with disassembly before the move or assemble of the bed frames, furniture after moving this could save a lot of time, and cost you less.

LOAD smaller items in your Vehicle:

If you are able to move smaller, awkward things, lamps, knick-knacks, loose boxes or any fragile or valuable items sealed correctly in your own vehicle it will be easier for the crew to load the truck and quickly transport it to your new place, without worrying about damage.

Reserve Parking Spots Beforehand:

If you are in an apartment, condo, or shared a home, try and reserve parking spots so the trucks can get as close to the building as possible. If you can access the truck better, the more efficient the crew will be.

Book the Elevator or Reserve the spot:

If you are living in an apartment, book off or reserve the elevator ahead of time. If you don’t have a lift, try and reserve a mid-week, or mid-month spot for your move because at that point the building won’t have as much foot traffic for the movers to be working around.
