Getting ready for your move this summer? There are a few guidelines no matter the "type" of move you're planning — big, small; local, long distance; moving yourself or hiring professionals — that will keep move day as close to stress-free as it can be.

As Canada's resident friendly, professional movers, we'd be remiss if we didn't share our forty years of accumulated moving knowledge with you! Keep reading to learn how you can move like a seasoned pro this summer.

Stay Hydrated

Regularly replacing lost fluids is the most important thing you must do for yourself on moving day. Moving is a physically demanding task, and in hot summer weather you're sure to be sweating more than usual. Even if you've hired movers, you'll be milling about and keeping busy on the day of your move. It's best to alternate between water and sports drinks throughout the day.

Pack Tightly (and Lightly!)

Okay, maybe not *that* snugly.

The best way to avoid damage to your belongings is to pack everything snugly. Boxes can be filled in with packing paper, peanuts, or even stuffed with clothes. Use your Tetris skills when loading boxes into your vehicle so that there's minimal jostling from house to house. You should also pack your boxes with a blend of heavy and light items — not just for your own safety, but to ensure the bottom of the box doesn't give out during the move!

Expect the unexpected

The truth is, the best movers are the ones who are prepared to deal with unexpected situations on moving day. You can plan every detail of the move, but there are many elements beyond your control that could go sideways when you're moving. Being able to improvise with patience is the best skill to have in your back pocket on moving day!

And finally... Don't sweat the small stuff!

Mentally, we're here.

This final point pairs nicely with our previous tip, but it's worth stating on its own. Moving is one of the most stressful things a person can do, and that means that small inconveniences can feel like insurmountable obstacles. If you have a favourite song, saying, or method to keep yourself calm, moving day is the best day to have that on deck.
