Reasons We Love Living and Working in Canada

Happy almost Canada Day everyone!

We’re excited to celebrate (responsibly of course) this long weekend, and we hope you are too. Thinking about celebrations always gets us thinking, why do we celebrate? What do we love about this country so much? The answer is a lot of things!

Facts About Canada that Make us Love it

We can’t fit all the reasons we love living and working in Canada into one blog post (sorry). But we thought we could put together some of our favourite, most interesting “Canada Facts” that also happen to be reasons we love our country.

  1. We have the World’s Longest Coastline

When most people think of Canada, they don’t think of beaches, but we actually have the longest coastline in the world. In fact, it would take you 4.5 years to straight walking to get around the entire thing.

We love Canada’s coasts – and we think more people should get out and experience them. With two oceans to choose from, there’s always something new to see on the coast.

  1. Basketball was Invented by a Canadian

We know, it might seem odd that the country that’s mostly known for hockey is the inventor of basketball, but it’s true. Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, and it’s now one of the most popular sports in the world.

Whether or not you like basketball, you have to admit one of the best things about Canada is all of sporting and activities available here. No matter what sport you’re interested in, you’ll be able to find somewhere to do it in Canada.

  1. 42% of Us Have a Higher Education Qualification

That’s right, nearly half of all Canadians have some Higher Education Qualification. That makes for a pretty well-educated country!

We have to say, we think Canada provided us with a great education. Not everyone is as lucky as we are here to receive quality elementary and high school education, so that’s something to be thankful for.

  1. Some of our National Parks are Bigger than Other Countries

Yep, Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta is bigger than 124 countries (including Denmark, Switzerland, Armenia, and El Salvador). In fact, we have 30 National Parks here that are each larger than 30 countries. Crazy.

Why do we love this? All the natural space of course. We love nature, and just like most Canadians, we want to do our best to ensure that nature is protected. National Parks are not only a great way to protect and preserve nature, they’re also excellent for touring, camping, hiking, water activities, and more.

  1. Americans Pretend to be us Abroad

We’ve all heard the stories of Americans wearing maple leaf pins when travelling abroad in an attempt to make people like them better, but does this actually happen? Turns out, it might.

According to Canadian flight booking website FlightNetwork.com, pretending to be Canadian abroad will actually get you better customer service. While we’re not sure just how many people actually do this, we think it’s pretty cool that other countries are that fond of us.

What Do Our Team Members Have to Say?

In addition to our favourite facts, here are a couple of quotes from Two Small Men team members who were asked what their favourite part about Canada was:

Addison (Calgary): “My favourite thing about living in Canada is the fresh mountain air.”

Heather (Edmonton): “I was born here! Big Maple Syrup and Hockey fan, eh!”

Johnny (Winnipeg): “Have you watched CNN lately?”

Austin (Edmonton): “I really appreciate all of the variety in terms of opportunities, culture, and people.”
