Moving to new city, or a new province, can be a stressful process. But there are a lot of things you can do to ensure the move goes as smoothly as if you were moving across the street. Below you’ll find Two Small Men’s top four tips for making a long distance move easier.
How to Make Your Long Distance Move Less Stressful:
-
Make a list of Your Stuff
This isn’t just useful for you to keep track of everything you’re moving. You’ll want to create a list that can be submitted to your mover. This list will be used by estimators to decide how much space or weight your belongings will take up on the truck. As these are the two most common measurements moving companies use to decide on price when moving long distance.
Of course we understand that it’s impossible to predict (or remember) every single item that will need to be moved. But the more accurate your list is, the more accurate your estimate will be.

Downsize, Declutter, and Donate
We get it; long distance moves can be expensive. In our experience, most people who are moving long distance are looking for ways to save money on their move. While there are a variety of ways to save money when moving, the number one method is simple: move less stuff.
When you’re moving long distance in particular, it’s a good idea to downsize or declutter before you move. Not only will it save you money on your move, but you’ll be able to get a fresh start in your new home city without all of that excess “stuff” that was cluttering up your old home.
If you’re going to be downsizing, our number one suggestion is to donate items you want to get rid of. There are a lot of charity organizations that can use the items you may want to throw away. So save yourself a trip to the dump, and help out people who are in need.

Communicate about pick-up and drop-off dates
From booking your move, to pick-up, to transport, to delivery, there’s a lot that can happen during the course of a long distance move. That’s why it’s so important to keep in communication with your moving company about pick up and delivery dates.
During the actual transport process of a long distance move, there’s a lot more that can happen. Movers often have to deal with traffic, weather, and mechanical events that wouldn’t happen during a move within the same city. The further the move, the more chances something like this will happen.
If you keep in contact with your movers and your moving company about the pick-up and delivery dates, everyone involved will be able to have a less stressful move.

Get to Know Your New City
This tip is more for you than it is for your moving company, but it’s one of the most important. Moving far away can be intimidating, so it’s important to do some research on your new city or town before you move there in order to feel more at home once you arrive.
